Skid-steered vehicles are manoeuvrable underground but their turning action necessarily involves sliding. On soft or sloped terrain, longitudinal and lateral traction can differ and can change with operating conditions.
This work estimates interpretable terrain parameters from onboard data and a multi-physics vehicle model. Better traction estimates can support braking, stability control, collision avoidance, energy prediction and autonomous mission planning.
